Propelling the Marathon Brand at 200 mph

Earlier this year, Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC) announced a sponsorship agreement with National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) racer Allen Johnson, an NHRA Pro Stock World Champion. To commemorate this agreement, Johnson’s custom Dodge Dart hot rod and team uniform are proudly emblazoned with the Marathon M. Seen here are pictures from the first race of the 2016 season, the Circle K Winternationals in Pomona, California, on February 11-14. The race kicked off the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, which is made up of 24 races in 21 cities throughout the year.

Pro Stock is one of the more than 200 classes of vehicles featured in NHRA competitions and is often called a “factory hot rod” because of its close resemblance to production-based automobiles. Despite their familiar exterior look, Pro Stock cars contain some of the most technologically advanced machines in drag racing. Thanks to impressive engineering, a competitive Pro Stock engine can generate 1,300 horsepower, propelling the vehicle in excess of 215 miles per hour on the strip.

Johnson’s partnership with MPC extends beyond the drag strip. He also owns Greenville Oil and Petroleum, which consists of 38 Quick Stop markets and three Lube X-Press oil change facilities, all carrying the Marathon brand. “We’re pleased to have this opportunity to partner with Allen and his proven record of success, both on the track and in our industry,” said Bill McCleave, MPC Brand Marketing director. “Allen and his racing team strongly complement the Marathon brand, and we’re proud to be aligned with such a great role model and champion in this sport.”
