Speedway employees help build playground in Florida

More than 200 volunteers joined forces on Saturday, Jan. 13, to build a new playground from a bare patch of dirt at the YMCA at Baptist North in Jacksonville, Florida. This effort was in conjunction with Dr. Pepper Snapple Group’s “Let’s Play” initiative to provide kids and families with the tools, places and inspiration to make active play a daily priority.

Under the leadership of Region Manager Aaron Schwarz, Speedway supplied more than 30 volunteers for the event, including local district managers, a large team of general managers and assistant managers, and other local support personnel. Overall, it was a great turnout and a lot of hard work by the Speedway Jacksonville Team, who received numerous accolades from the folks from Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, national nonprofit partner KaBOOM!, and the YMCA.

Speedway provided coffee and donuts for breakfast and the Food Marketing team provided sub sandwiches, pizza, and cookies for lunch. It was hard to miss Speedway’s presence at the event, as all volunteers wore their Speedway safety vests! After seven hours of mixing concrete, assembling playground equipment, and hauling and laying down two mountains of mulch, the YMCA has a boast-worthy playground. “I am very proud of the time and efforts our Jacksonville team donated,” said Division Director Gary Michniewicz. “They all had great attitudes and enjoyed the day.”
