4 reasons to check out the Marathon Classic (Hint: win free gas!)
The LPGA tournament is held at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio
The 2015 Marathon Classic, presented by Owens Corning and Owens-Illinois, begins Thursday, July 16. The world’s top LPGA players will compete over four days in an exciting showdown and an impressive display of talent for the sport. The final round will be played on Sunday, July 19.
1. Stacy Lewis: 2014 LPGA Player of the Year
Stacy Lewis, sponsored by Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC) is currently the number three ranked player in the world. 2014 proved to be an impressive year for Lewis. Not only was she ranked number one in the world for 22 weeks, but she was also named the Rolex Player of the Year for the second time in her career. She was also ranked number one in 8 out of the LPGA’s 20 statistical categories, including scoring average, rounds under par, and birdies. A native to Toledo, Ohio, Lewis will be vying to win the Marathon Classic alongside last year’s winner, Lydia Ko, who finished the tournament 15 under par. Many are anxious to see how Lewis, the hometown favorite, will perform this year. Lewis tied for 25th place with a final tournament score of six under par.
2. MPC Behind the Scenes
Aside from the tournament’s game play, Marathon Petroleum has been hard at work behind-the-scenes. Preparations for MPC’s involvement begin almost immediately after the completion of the previous year’s tournament. Each year, the tournament relies on nearly 1,500 volunteers to ensure success. MPC employees, retirees, and their families step up to the plate to work at the tournament in a variety of roles. This year, around 130 volunteers are signed up as hole marshals and scorekeepers, among other positions. In fact, several holes are completely staffed by MPC employees.
3. Win free gas!
Like last year, visitors to the MPC corporate tent can learn more about the company, while also entering into an hourly gas gift card giveaway. Additionally, those who register for the Marathon Visa credit card will automatically get a free gas gift card, randomly pre-loaded with various dollar amounts.
4. Golf simulator – and win more free gas!
New this year is the addition of the aboutGolf simulator tent. Here spectators will get the opportunity to compete for prizes on one of the most accurate golf simulation devices on the market. Participants will take turns hitting from the tee box to win free gas cards. The daily closest-to-the-pin winners will be invited back for a showdown on Sunday. The two closest-to-the-pin winners from each day will get the opportunity to shoot for a hole-in-one at the final round on Sunday to win a brand new Chevy Cruz.
