Achieving the VPP ‘Triple Crown’

Summary

MPC’s refinery in Robinson, Ill., is awarded the 2014 VPP Innovation Award, the third of three recognitions it has received from the VPPPA.

Upon receiving the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) 2014 National Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Innovation Award, the Robinson, Ill., refinery achieved what could be considered the VPP “triple crown.”

“The VPP Innovation Award is one of only three awards presented annually by the National Voluntary Protection Program Participants’ Association (VPPPA) awards committee, and we are the only site to have earned all three of them,” explains General Manager Kevin Bogard, who accepted the Innovation Award at the 2014 Annual National VPPPA Conference in Maryland. “The Innovation Award recognized the refinery’s Life Safety Solution (LSS) monitoring system, a multi-gas detector manufactured by Industrial Scientific, with built-in Wi-Fi capabilities by AeroScout,” he adds.

Other features of the employee-monitoring system include:

  • real-time gas readings
  • lack-of-motion detection (man-down)
  • a panic button and location-tracking for wearers
  • continuous monitoring via a console operator
  • alarm-response procedures that coincide with specific incidents

The Robinson refinery has shared its success with LSS both nationally and internationally, according to Bogard. “In the past few years, the refinery has hosted Atlantic LNG from Trinidad, Logan Aluminum, Georgia Pacific, US Steel and Bashneft, a Russian refining company, to showcase the LSS,” he notes. “We are proud of its life-saving technology and pleased that OSHA chose to recognize it.”

The other two national VPP awards in the triple crown include the VPP Outreach Award, which the Robinson refinery received in 2009 for their efforts to mentor several resident contractors to achieve VPP status, and the VPP Safety and Health Outreach Award, earned in 2013 for the refinery’s efforts to mentor nine resident contractors to achieve behavior-based safety accreditation.

“We are proud to once again be recognized by the National VPPPA Awards Committee for our efforts to ensure the safety and health of our employees as well as our community and industry,” says Bogard. “We also congratulate and appreciate all those involved in achieving this recognition.”
