Awards Recognize the Importance of Safety at MPC

Marathon Petroleum Corporation’s (MPC’s) Robinson, Illinois, refinery received the Safety and Health Outreach award from the Voluntary Protection Programs Participants’ Association (VPPPA), a division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). This national award was one of three others given by the VPPPA in 2015.

According to the VPPPA, Robinson won the award for going above and beyond in the realm of safety outreach. Specifically, the refinery was recognized for hosting its Behavioral Based Safety (BBS) conference in 2014 that featured nationally known leaders in the safety field. BBS programming aims to continuously improve safety in the workplace through identification, observation and discussion of risky behaviors. More than 450 participants attended the conference, representing MPC and companies from other states including Michigan, Louisiana, North Carolina and Wyoming.

In recognition of Robinson’s BBS process, the refinery also received the first-ever Platinum Accreditation from the Cambridge Center for Behavior Studies (CCBS). The CCBS is a not-for-profit organization that harnesses the works of academia and the expertise of hundreds of behavioral scientists to solve problems in the home, school, community and the workplace. Worksites around the world have called upon the CCBS to accredit their BBS processes. The Platinum Accreditation was created after the refinery received several Gold Accreditation awards, beginning in 2005.

In winning this award, the refinery’s annual BBS conference was again recognized. In addition, the refinery partnered with CCBS on accreditation visits to other facilities, sending members of the refinery’s BBS steering committee to different businesses to serve as mentors, and publishing articles about BBS in safety blogs and magazines. These actions inspired a new level of accreditation from the Cambridge Center for this outstanding new level of achievement.

“We are proud to once again be recognized by the National VPPPA Awards Committee for our efforts to ensure the safety and health of our employees as well as our community and industry,” said Kevin Bogard, Robinson refinery general manager. “We are also extremely honored to be recognized with the inaugural Platinum Accreditation from the Cambridge Center. We congratulate and appreciate all those involved in achieving this recognition.”
