CBS brings bigger audience to 2016 Marathon Classic
The final round of the 2016 Marathon Classic Presented by Owens Corning and O-I airs live on CBS Sports today from 4 to 6 p.m. EDT. Produced by Golf Channel (which also broadcast the first three rounds of the tournament), this network coverage brings this northwest Ohio tournament to the largest national audience in its 32-year history.
“Our team has been focused on expanding our network TV coverage, which gives us a chance to showcase the LPGA to a much broader audience to attract more casual fans,” said LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan when the CBS coverage was announced in March. “Adding CBS to the tour’s schedule is an incredible addition, and we realize that this would not have been possible without the tremendous support of Marathon Petroleum. They continue to raise the bar in Toledo and to help make women’s golf a priority on the sports landscape.”
“We are committed to furthering the popularity of the LPGA, and this broadcast is one of the many ways we can do so,” said Tom Kelley, senior vice president of marketing for Marathon Petroleum Corporation. “This enhanced exposure to the Marathon Classic and northwest Ohio brings nationwide attention to the LPGA and its players.”
According to the press release issued by LPGA, the Marathon Classic is now the seventh event in 2016 on network television for at least the final round, up from just two events in 2011. With this coverage on CBS, women’s golf is now featured on all four major networks for the first time in the tour’s history. The LPGA Tour’s television hours have nearly doubled over the last four years. The more than 400 hours broadcast globally in 2016 set a new record for the sport.
The 2016 Marathon Classic is a great preview of golf's return to the Olympics in a few weeks. In total, 23 Olympic-qualifying players representing 17 countries are participating in the tournament. The CBS coverage showcases this exciting competition and puts the world’s best female golfers on one of the biggest stages in the nation.
