MPC celebrates new accomplishments

It's been a busy year for MPC! Here's a look at some of the company's biggest achievements from the past year.


  • MPC Employees Political Action Committee achieved 53 percent participation of eligible employees and more than $2 million in contributions for the 2015-2016 election cycle

  • Achieved a 91 percent overall employee engagement score in the 2016 survey, validating MPC’s recognition by Forbes as America’s Best Large Employer

  • Developed partnerships with three major universities to enhance recruiting of qualified minority and female candidates for engineering positions

  • Findlay Campus expansion completed with the opening of the South Parking Garage, Green Space, and MPLX Building


  • Completed margin-enhancing projects:

    • Robinson light crude upgrade

    • Garyville fluid catalytic cracker and alky revamp

    • Detroit/Buckeye Pipeline capacity increase

    • Galveston Bay ultra-low-sulfur diesel dock expansion

  • Progressed the South Texas Asset Repositioning (STAR) project by completing the residual oil upgrader re-purpose/revamp

Transportation and Logistics (T&L)

  • Achieved very strong overall performance on key metrics, including all-time best process safety, environmental and product stewardship performance, along with maximum reliability performance by all T&L components and target overall personal safety performance

  • Implemented several performance excellence initiatives:

    • Field Stop-Help-Start

    • Improved business processes

    • Progressed deployment of advanced field mobile technology

    • Improved speed-to-market for projects

  • MPC/MPLX growth projects:

    • Successfully completed Cornerstone and Hopedale-to-Hissem pipeline projects

    • Successfully completed crude pipeline expansions and Robinson-Indiana-Ohio (RIO) Pipeline reversal

    • Progressed Utica Shale pipelines build-out and Robinson Butane Cavern project

    • Expanded blue-water fleet through Crowley Marine joint ventures

Supply, Distribution and Planning

  • Partnered with Business Development to negotiate equity position in the Dakota Access Pipeline, securing direct access to Bakken crude oil

  • Completed agreements with MarkWest to enhance synergy value between MPC and MarkWest


  • Achieved record earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $1 billion

  • Achieved record merchandise sales of $5 billion

  • Achieved record merchandise margin of $1.4 billion

  • Completed final conversions of acquired Speedway East stores to the Speedway brand

  • Created Pilot Flying J Southeast LLC joint venture, which will operate former Speedway travel centers


  • Successfully maintained fuel supplies to contract customers during supply-disrupting events – Colonial Pipeline release and Hurricane Matthew

  • Increased wholesale distillate sales by more than six percent even as demand was down

  • Increased asphalt volume sales by more than 10 percent through flexible supply and multiple channels


  • Met distribution growth guidance of 12 to 15 percent (actual was 13 percent), and exceeded goal of $1.05 billion for distributable cash flow (achieving $1.14 billion)

  • MarkWest finished first relative to its gas and NGL processing peers in the 2016 Energy Point Survey for customer satisfaction

  • Entered prolific Delaware Basin of Texas with the Hidalgo gas processing plant, and expanded in the STACK shale play in Oklahoma

  • Completed acquisition of MPC Marine organization
