Speedway opens first store in Texas

Speedway store #9800, located just a few blocks from MPC’s Galveston Bay refinery (GBR), opened for business on May 24. This 4,600-square foot convenience store represents Speedway’s first presence in Texas.

Under the canopy are 20 fueling positions from 10 dispenser islands, featuring 12-inch screens and enhanced customer security and convenience features. Where most new-build Speedway stores may offer up to four diesel fueling positions in the forecourt, the Texas City store has diesel at every dispenser to accommodate heavy-duty pickup trucks.

Inside the store, customers are greeted by an extensive food and beverage selection, including the first Speedy Café west of the Mississippi. Speedy Café is a fast-casual restaurant where customers place their orders on a self-serve ordering kiosk. The food is freshly prepared and features paninis, subs, specialty dogs, customizable pizzas, handcrafted beverages (lattes, mochas, smoothies and frappes), breakfast sandwiches, and sides.

Opening a store located more than 600 miles from the nearest operating Speedway (Jackson, Tennessee) presented its share of challenges. With the store assigned to the Florida Division, Division Director Gary Michniewicz and his team were up for the challenge despite construction setbacks from weather and the logistics of training the store leadership team in states as far away as Ohio.

“We are happy and thrilled to have our new Speedway location in Texas City,” Michniewicz said. “This was truly a collaborative effort between Speedway and the Galveston Bay refinery. The GBR team helped support our recruiting and training efforts by opening their facilities to train our new employees. Speedy Rewards ambassadors from Florida signed up and registered over 500 new Speedy Rewards members from the refinery over a two-day period. I am grateful to all the employees who spent countless hours planning, training, and making this store in Texas City possible. It’s great to have the Speedway brand in Texas! We look forward to serving our new customers and growing our brand in Texas City.”
